corks and steam and all that jazz

we had a run in with a cork tree last night. we took a walk around the neighborhood (what an uncalifornia thing to do, at least here in the peninsula), and admired a house that looked like it used to be a farm from afar. it was big, yellow, with a lovely screened in porch on the second story. on the way back, its owner was in the yard, and we mentioned that we had liked his house. he then pointed out his tree-- a giant cork tree the likes of which i haven't seen since i was 8 years old and we were driving from bielefeld through spain, to hop on a ferry to go to the canary islands. beautiful tree.

i also got scammed on BART the other day. some kid who was dilligently collecting signatures and money for some unknown good cause needed my pen, with which i was editing my dissertation. i gave it to him, he said he'd get it back to me, and that is the last i saw of my green ballpoint.

now you know my little secret. i like green pens!

the weather has been ungodly hot. well, in the 80s, which simply means our little 480 sq.ft. of apartment goodness that we have (YES TINY) heats up to the temperature that a good finnish sauna might have. we only lack the steam, the salmiakki (finnish booze that really rocks my socks), and the birch branches with which to beat each other. don't worry, no domestic abuse here, just good, old fashioned sauna-beating going on. :)

more in a few days. i've been all out of words since i've been trying to write more on my dissertation. there only seem to be so many in my head at any given time.
